Item Item Item Item Differences between speech patterns of men and women portrayed in the media(Washburn University) Harrell, Katelin R.; Dr. Sarah UbelThe use of language is a very important variable when considering how persuasive a message is. Research indicates that typically a powerful message is one that does not contain many hedges, hesitations or intensifiers. Studies suggest that the use of powerful speech makes the speaker appear more authoritative and credible. This study examined the differences between men's and women's use of powerful and powerless speech patterns in a legal television show. The show was evaluated on how the media portrayed messages of men compared to women, whether or not women engaged in more powerless speech patterns. A content analysis was done in order to determine the differences in the amount of hedges, hesitations, and intensifiers that were used by the actors.Item
